What is the Amaavasyaa or Amaavas, Umaas & its importance?
What is the Masa, Masik, Aadi Amavasya or Amaavasyaam ?
Amavasya is a ‘no moon day’.
In the dark half of the each month.
It’s a tithi (lunar dark fortnightly) day.
It is being called Amavasya or Amavas.w
In Sanskrit it’s called Amavasyam, Sindhi Umas.
It has due importance in astronomy and astrology.
It is when we see can the side of the moon which is unlit.
It is new moon, when the moon is more or less invisible in the night sky.
Traditionally, Hindus perform prayers of tarpan, ‘tarpanam’on each month.
This tarpanam is devoted to the devatas, rishis, divya-manushya & pitraas (pitrus).
It is being called in the Sanskrit Dev tarpanam, Rishi Tarpanam and the Pitra tarpanam.
Respectively, it’s Dev-Rinn, Rishi-Rin and the Pitra-Rin (Debt). When Grahan on Amavasya.
On that Amavas (No moon – New moon phase) there will be observance of Surya Grahan (Solar Eeclipse).
For example, this year 2020, 20/21 June & 14/15 December there is Surya Grahan, hence, Amavasya
accordingly will be observed, wherever these said Sun eclipse are visible and for its sutak-kaal samay.

Amavasya is one of auspicious annual day to pray and celebrate, a festival of lights!
These prayers and festivities are being called with different names such as Diwali, Deepavali, Deepotsava
and in Sindhi Diyari. Prayers on Amavasya are the most important. Removing darkness by lighting up
the series of Deepam ‘Diyas’ and hence it becomes ‘Deepavali’. Not only temples, houses, home temples are lighted up with dipavali diyas, but also different place of works, shop, offices also have an annual ‘diwali celebrations’. Praying to Laxmi, Sarada Saraswati. Day of Diwali Lakshmi Pooja, Chopada Puja. Kuber puja, Dhan puja, Dhan Lakshmi Pooja, and Dhanvantri Pooja also has due importance. Chants of Lakshmi stuti on Amavasya has its due role on this day. Sri Yantra pooja or Laxmi Pooja on Diwali is conducted on Amavas to devote the day to the deity with devotional reciting of ‘Sri Suktam’. Goddess Devi Ma Laxmi!

Her blessings, Her darshan on the no moon day (Amavasya lunar day) bring light while she wearing pearls, diamonds light and Her presence, Her dwelling on this night together with ‘seekers’ removes the all darkness outer and inner by bringing ‘light’ a night of light, of happiness, of anxiously waiting for Her visit, for Her welcome, for Her prayers. One meditates on the Amavasya.
On this phase of moon ‘new moon’ amavasya (umaas) an annual day becomes a mark of festival of lights.
Amavasya lunar day also celebrated for snaan (holy bath) during Kumbh Mela, Ardha-Kumbha at Haridwar, Nasik, Prayagraj. 11th February 2021 is Maaghi Amavasya Snaan (Holy Bath, Shahi Snaan).

Amavasya occurs in each masa,
maasam, maashik (in a month or monthly).
The Amaavasyaa (the new moon) occurs when the
‘Sun and the Moon are on the same side of the earth’.
It occurs in each ‘masa’ (month) ‘Krishna Paksha’ (in the dark fortnight).
Regional Panchangam, Hindu Lunar Calendar, Solar Calendar or Luni-Solar Calendar;
Chandra Masa or Surya Masa, monthwise or rashiwise Amavasya tithi is being observed monthly.
‘Born in an amā-vāsyā night’ (rātri; vas ‘to dwell’, with amā ‘together’ relating to sun/moon. (P.p. 81; Veda)

There is Bhomavati Amavasya, Darsh Amavasya, Dev-Amavasya (Dev-kaarya Amavasya), Pithori Amavasya, Somvati Amavasya and Mauni Amavasya. The Masikam Monthly Amavasya (every month prayer procedural rituals for Pitras and (Pitra Paksha Amavasya or Sarva Pitra Amavasya tithi puja ritual tarpanam pindam (to conduct farewell for ancestors) and ‘feeding shraaddha of shraadha paksha’ on the ‘last lunar day’ of the month (precisely to say it is the last day of a dark fortnight’s darkest lunar day) to perform aadi sradha tarpanam, pindam Sraddha Viddhi (its procedure) during September or October each year), Mahalaya Amavasya.

अमावस कृष्ण पक्ष में प्रतिमास चन्द्रमा (चन्द्र-चांद) धीरे-धीरे घटने लगता है और एक दिन
पूरी तरह लुप्त हो जाता है, इस अंतिम दिनके कृष्णपक्ष चन्द्रमाँको हम अमावस्या कहते हैं ।
हर-महिने कृष्णपक्ष अमावस्या-तिथीके दिन पितरों का तर्पण किया जाता है ।
