Cow in Sanskrit is called ‘गो’. Cow – Gau pooja is performed on 8th tithi.
“The 8^th day in the light half of month Karttika (on which Krishna who had
formerly been a keeper of calves became a cowherd; cows are especially to
be worshipped on this day.).”

धनं च गोधनं प्राहुः “Dhanam cha Gau-dhanam Praahuu”.

“Amongst cows, I am Kamadhenu.”
“The welfare of the world depends upon the
cow”. “The milk, curd, butter and ghee are
all used in religious ceremonies.”

“May you, cows, have many many calves, graze on good pastures,
drink water at good drinking places,
may not the thieves and the wicked persons master you,
may the darts of Rudra leave you aside”.

On the eight day after main day of Diwali festival celebrations and Diwali-Diyaari Mahalaxmi puja. And 7 days after the famous festival Govardhan Puja, Annakoota puja, Chhapan bhog. Seven 7 days before the Kartik Masa Purnima, Guru-Nanak Birthday.

On the Gop-Ashtami tithi (8^th lunar day) Nanda-Baba performed a ceremony
for the गऊ Gau (cows) and Sri Krishna when He reached the particular aayu
(age). This was the tithi (day) for Sri Krishna and Sri Balaram to herd the cows
(for grazing cows) the first time and became Gopashtmi. This utsav (festival
celebrations) related names are Gopashtmi गोपाष्टमी, Gau Astami गऊ अष्टमी,
Gopal Ashtami गोपाल-अष्टमी, गोविन्द-अष्टमी.

What is being done on the Gau pooja (On Gopashtami)?
On the auspicious eighth thithi, cows and their calf are being decorated.
The importance, rituals of worshipping cows and calf sacred prayers happens.
Cow and cows related immense importance is narrated in Vedas, puranas.
Rishi-Munis have sung the glory of gau ma (cow) as ‘universal mother’. Importance of Gau (cow) by taking their care by Sri Krishna Himself.
Gau-Seva, Gau-Puja, Gau-stuti, Bhajan-Kirtan has its significance.

गोप अष्टमी – गायों की पूजा :

कार्तिकमास के शुक्लपक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को गोपाष्टमी उत्सव मनाया जाता है ।

हर वर्ष कार्तिक मास शुक्ल अष्टमीको गोपष्टमी का उत्सव मनाया जाता है । इसीदिन भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को गौ चरण के लिये वन में भेजा गया था । इस दिन गाय, बछड़े और ग्वालों की विशेष पूजा की जाती है । यह गोपाष्टमी उत्सव अनेकों स्थानों पर मनाया जाता है, परन्तु मथुरा, ब्रज और वृंदावन में विशेषरूप से मनाया जाता है ।
