It means, “The Sun”. *R. 5. 13.
Surya is the important Solar deity worshipped by the Hindus.
What is ‘Sankranti’ meaning संक्रांति: – सूर्य संक्रांति क्या है?
It is, “The Sun’s entering into a sign of a zodiac.”
When a Sankranti signifies & when it occurs?
संक्रांतिः Sankrantihi signifies,
“the sun’s passage from one zodiacal sign to another.”
Samkranti संक्रांतिः means, “going from a place to another, course or passage or entry into, transference to; (in astronomy) passage of the Sun or a planet from one sign or position in the heavens into another (e.g. uttarayana surya, ‘passage of the sun to its northern course’.”
What is importance of Solar month and how it is determined?
“A Solar Month is determined on the
Sun’s entry into a Sign or Sankranti as it is popular”.
Entry of Surya (Sun) into the Makar Rashi (Capricorn Sign)
also the Northern course or Uttarayan is called
Makar Sankranti and it has religious value.
Importance of Sankranti in Hindu Rites, Rituals, Customs:
“It is important to offer special reverence to Surya on Sankranti
(entering of the sun or a planet into a new sign of the zodiac)
and Surya Shashthi (the sixth day of a fortnight).
Otherwise, it is customary to offer
prayers to Surya on all Sundays.
Many observe a fast too.”
Surya pravesh (Sun’s entry) occurs on each rashi (sign)
and respectively said named Sankranti emerges.
Sankranti – Sankrant mean when the Surya Pravesh
(Sun enters) from one rashi (sign) to another.
There are twelve rashis (12 signs) namely
Mekh (Mekha), Virkh, Mithun, Kark,
Singh-Simha, Kanya, Tula,Vrischik,
Dhan, Makar, Kumbh and Meena.
How many Sankranti occur annually?
It occurs once in a month.
12 months ‘twelve Sankranti’ occur in a year.
Sankranti is not based on tithi. It doesn’t occur on tithi.
It’s mentioned above, that Sankrant is the:
Sun’s passage from one zodiacal sign to another.
But when any masa (month) when it is absent then:
“Yasmin Maase Na Sankrantihi, Sankranti Ddwayam-aiva Vaa;
Mala-Maasaha Sa Vigyeyo Maase Trinshattame Bhaveta”.
A month in which sankranti is not present, then there is a adhik masa.
A Leap month is called an Adhik Maas.
Note: Whenever, any given Hindu Calendar Maasa – Masam (month) of the year,
when there is ‘No Sankranti’, then that Hindu month is called ‘adhi’ or ‘adhikam’ or
‘Purshotam Masa or Masam’ and or ‘intercalary’. For example given years of Adhik
masa (intercalated month) is:
- Ashwin Adhik Masa: Aaso (Shukla Pratham tithi to Ashwin Krishna Amavas tithi) (2020) Assu Jo Mahino Dharmaau Mahino) There is no Sankranti in full month. Adhik Masa Samvat 2077 starting from Friday 18-09-2020 to Friday 16-10- 2020.
- Shravan: Savan Masa (Sawan Shukla Pratham tithi – Savan Krishna Amavas tithi) (2023) Savan Mahina – Sawan Jo Dharmaau Mahino)There is no Sankranti in full month. Adhik Masa Samvat 2080: begins from Tuesday 18-07 to Wednesday 16-08-2023.
Hence, it’s an ‘Adhi Maas’, Purshotam Masa.
It’s the thirteenth ‘intercalated’ month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar.
A Hindu Panchangam, a whole month of ‘adhik maasam’ is leaped.
